Since July 1, '03 there is a tax on Lotto
prizes. The good news; prizes under NIS 70,000 are tax exempt. Winning a prizes over NIS 70,000 (about $16,000) is good news, but there are taxes to be paid. Prizes over NIS 140,000 are subject to 25% tax. Between 70,000 and 140,000 the tax is calculated as 25% of twice the amount the prize exceeds 70,000. For example on a prize of 90,000 the amount the prize exceeds 70,000 is 20,000. So the tax is 25% of 40,000 (i.e. 2 x 20,000) which works out to a tax of NIS 10,000 Say the first prize on a Tuesday is NIS 5,000,000. After 25% tax the winner will be left with NIS 3,750,000 or around $860,000. Still something to dream about ;-0 Prevention of "money laundering" |
